Alright, guys, so I’ve been diving deep into Elden Ring lately, and I ran into a little question that I figured I’d share my experience with: Can you actually use a PS4 controller on the Steam version of Elden Ring? I mean, it is 2024 already?
So, first things first, I plugged in my trusty old DualShock 4. I just grabbed a standard USB cable, connected one end to the controller and the other to my PC, you know, pretty standard setup. Windows did its usual thing – that little “ding” sound letting me know it recognized something.
Initial Setup
Next, I fired up Steam. My Elden Ring was there, of course. I went to Big Picture Mode, I do it usually. In my memory I thought it was needed.
Checking Controller Settings
- I navigated to the “Settings” – it’s that little gear icon.
- Then, I clicked on “Controller Settings.”
- Lo and behold, there was an option for “PlayStation Configuration Support.” I made sure that was checked.
With that done, I launched Elden Ring. And…nothing. The game started, but my controller wasn’t doing a thing. I was still stuck using my keyboard and mouse, which, let’s be honest, isn’t ideal for a game like this. It felt so clunky!
Troubleshooting Time
So, I did some digging. I remembered that sometimes, you need to mess with the in-game settings. I went into Elden Ring’s “System” menu, then to “Sound and Display”. I found a section all about controller input. There’s an option that was set to “Keyboard/Mouse”. I clicked on that, I changed to the Controller option.
I backed out of the menus and…BAM! My PS4 controller was working! I could move my character, attack, dodge – everything was smooth as butter. It felt so much better than using a keyboard and mouse.
Conclusion?
So, yeah, it totally works. You just gotta make sure Steam is set up to recognize PlayStation controllers, and then tweak the in-game settings to prioritize controller input. It’s a bit of a process, but trust me, it’s worth it for that sweet, sweet controller gameplay. Also, it works without Big Picture Mode, I tried.
