Then, I tried to be more specific with my searches. I started looking for things like “Megami Tensei demon compendium” and “list of all SMT demons.” That got me a little closer, but still no definitive answer. It’s a mess. There are main series games, spin-offs, mobile games… it’s a lot.
- Mainline Shin Megami Tensei games: These seemed like the core, so I focused on them first.
- Persona series: Obviously a huge one, with tons of recurring demons.
- Other spin-offs: Devil Summoner, Digital Devil Saga, etc. I knew these would add to the count.
I even stumbled upon some forum discussions where people were debating this very question. Some folks were throwing around numbers in the hundreds, others were saying it was easily over a thousand. It was clear no one really knew for sure.
My (Imperfect) Conclusion
Honestly? I gave up on finding an exact number. It’s just too much. Between all the different games, regional variations, and evolutions/fusions, it’s probably impossible to get a perfect count. My best guess, and it’s a total shot in the dark, is that there are well over a thousand unique demon designs across the entire Megami Tensei franchise, It’s a massive, ever-growing collection, and that’s part of what makes it so cool (and overwhelming!).
Maybe someday someone will create a truly comprehensive database, but until then, I’m just going to appreciate the sheer variety and enjoy encountering new demons as I play.
